The story behind Shri Sachin Tendulkar’s arrival!

Sachin Tendulkar was selected as the chief guest by Kerala Government for the 67th edition of Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Punnamada Lake. The boat race was held on 31st August 2019. Based on his arrival plans, we very eagerly put together a welcoming event.

Sachin Tendulkar arrived at the scenic Lake Palace Resort on 30th August 2019. Kerala’s Finance Minister, Shri Thomas Isaac, along with the then chairman of the Lake Palace Resort, Late Shri Thomas Chandy MLA and his team, cordially welcomed Sachin Tendulkar to the stunning resort in the middle of Alleppey backwaters.

A personal butler was assigned to Shri Sachin Tendulkar for all his needs and requirements. An authentic Kerala dinner was served.

The 67th Nehru Trophy boat race day arrives……

The humbleness of Shri Sachin Tendulkar came to the fore as he was willing to meet his fans on the property of Lake Palace Resort in the morning of 31 August 2019. This was a memorable event for all the fans as well as people gathered around to meet the icon.

Around 2.15 PM, he was dropped off at the starting point of Nehru Trophy Boat Race in our Ebenezer Water Boat. The event was from 2.30 PM to 5 PM.

The flagging off ceremony

The 67th Nehru Trophy Boat race was flagged off by Shri Sachin Tendulkar, at 2.30 PM. The mega event started well, with all the boat rowers urging rowing in tandem, showcasing the competitive spirit. He stayed in his allotted area for the entire boat race. We were thrilled to be with him for the entire event, cheering the boat rowers on.

A brief history on the Nehru Trophy Boat Race

Popularly and rightly known as Kuttanad’s Olympics on Water, The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, a competition of snake-boats commenced in 1952, in the presence of then Indian Prime Minister, Late Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru. On a trip from Kottayam to Alappuzha, in Kerala, via a snake boat, he was escorted by several boats.

Shri Jawaharlal Nehru’s enthusiasm!

A small race was conducted among these boats in the honor of him. Upon observing the enthusiasm of oarsmen, he presented the winner of this boat race with a silver trophy in the shape of a snake boat placed on a wooden frame; this came to be known as the Nehru trophy. Since then, snake boat races are conducted in Alappuzha every year on 31st August.

This boat race showcases the cultural customs of Kerala and is a very unique event. A quote was inscribed on the trophy with his signature, highlighting the name of the winners.

The rhythm of Vanchipaatu!

Eight snake boats usually participate in this epic and legendary boat race. These boats include Nadubhagom, Chambakkulam, Parthasarathy, Kavalam, Valiya Diwanji, Neppolean, Nethaji, and GearGoss. The oarsmen of these boats practice real hard weeks before this mega event and these boats are rowed to the rhythm of ancient “vanchipaatu” written by a famous Malayalam poet, Shri Ramapurathu Warrier in honor of the then King, Thiru Marthandavarma of Travancore.  .

The return of Shri Sachin Tendulkar

Shri Sachin Tendulkar returned back to our Lake Palace Resort, after the mega event and we welcomed him with a delicious traditional lunch. He rested for a while and interacted with people around, in our resort. It was indeed a treat to observe the humbleness of him.

An official meeting!

We had arranged a meeting spot in our very own cozy coffee shop. Here, Shri Sachin Tendulkar had an official meeting with certain Kerala Government officials, wherein he discussed so many important matters with them. The meeting went well and he loved the ambience of our resort in the middle of the scenic Alleppey backwaters.

Wonderful Feedback

The feedback we received from Shri Sachin Tendulkar was good. He was so happy to get welcomed by us and to have an opportunity to meet the fans. He gave us excellent reviews on our facilities; mainly, the mini gift shop, and coffee shop, to name a few. Shri Sachin was amazed by the room we provided him. The personal butler, we assigned to him, took care of his needs and requirements. The traditional Kerala dishes that were provided him were a hit. With him looking around our resort in awe, his visit was one for the ages. We wish he will visit again soon enough to celebrate any events or milestones with us.

The Departure

After an eventful couple of days, he wished us well before traveling to the Cochin airport. The moments he gave us, including the flagging off Nehru Trophy Boat Race, will always be nostalgic to us. It was an honor to have him at our resort. We would love to welcome him back, whenever he comes to Cochin, Alleppey, or Kerala.
